MARK GARRISON x PHYTO
The Mark Garrison Salon is synonymous with expertise and finesse. The man who cultivated the salon is known for the very same. We spoke to the hair styling maven about his beginnings, the lessons he learned, and his relationship with PHYTO.
La Phytothèque: Tell us a bit about you!
Mark Garrison: I have been a hairdresser for 42 years. I started fresh out of high school and started learning the ropes right away. I knew from the beginning that to be one of the best I had to work with other hairdressers that were considered top of the field.
I worked as an apprentice at a salon, that was my first role, after which I was promoted to a stylist. I left a few years later to move to Paris where I worked as an editorial and studio hairdresser. I stayed in France for 8 wonderful years before feeling the itch to get back into a salon environment. Fast forward 20 years and the Mark Garrison Salon was born. This is where I train my apprentices in cut and color and make remarkable connections with clients.
LP: How have the PHYTO Paris products changed your approach to haircare and styling?
MG: PHYTO is way ahead of its time! I have worked with the line since the 1980s when I lived in Paris. It was a staple product for most editorial hairdressers. The brand taught me how important healthy haircare was. I'm so glad I learned this early on as it has definitely shaped the way I approach any styling technique.
LP: When did your love for PHYTO Paris begin?
MG: It's going to sound cliché, but I fell in love with it in Paris.
LP: What is the first PHYTO Paris product that you tried?
MG: The Phyto Plage Oil.
LP: What is your advice for scalp care?
MG: Healthy follicles and scalp equal healthy hair!
LP: What is your advice to aspiring hairstylists on their career?
MG: Try and train with the best. Beauty school only gets you the basics. Hairdressing is a practical trade, aspire to learn from the best possible hairdressers you can find in your area. If you are fortunate enough to go to New York, Paris or London then try and get some experience there.
LP: In your salon, why do you think stylists love PHYTO Paris?
MG: PHYTO wrote the book on healthy hair care. With all the natural, botanical and plant-based products coming out right now, our team recognizes and respects that they were first.
LP: Which product do you use the most on clients? Why?
MG: Phytodéfrisant for smoothing hair and Phytovolume to give body and shape. Clients love these products as they instantly see results.
LP: What PHYTO Paris products are needed to recreate a voluminous and effortless hairstyle?
MG: Phytovolume; start with shampoos and follow up with the Volume spray. Perfection.
